I recently participated in a Startup Incubator workshop called Startup Boat on the Greek island of Samos (startupboat.org)
The focus of this incubator was to develop projects that provide solutions to the current Refugee Crisis happening worldwide.
On that trip, we visited the abandoned refugee camp overlooking Vathi Harbor. The camp was designed to house 680 people but soon grew to an improvised settlement of 7,000 displaced people looking to make a new life. Conflict grew in the camp due to a lack of supplies, poor coordination, and harsh conditions. Eventually, the local authorities and the UNHCR couldn't handle the situation and decided to evacuate the camp within a single day, distributing these people across Europe. The remains of that camp are still scattered across the Greek countryside, showing how government-run refugee camps can fail. However, in context to the current war in Ukraine, it serves as a motivation to design and build better housing solutions, so this doesn't happen again.
